Filoxenia in the Family
Myconian Kyma opens with a Cycladic splash
Berlin, May 02, 2017 – Opening today and kicking off the season of long, languid summer days spent on Mykonos, the Myconian Kyma is set to exceed all expectations of the definitive Grecian paradise. Located a stone’s throw from Mykonos Town, the 81-room hotel claims a golden, sun-drenched perch just above the buzz below. Unobstructed views pervade the eyeline, while top-notch pampering ensures relaxation and respite for the whole family. And there’s even a chapel for those taking the other kind of plunge.

This abundant island is largely—and for good reason—celebrated for its beach, nightlife, and shopping culture, but there is much more than just this. At Myconian Kyma a tailored approach to service means there’s something for everyone’s tastes. From a day spent in Mykonos town, a day trip to the ancient city of Delos, tips on the best beaches, and organizing water sports and horseback riding, to assisting with private yacht and even the hire of the hotel’s own helicopter. Throw in picturesque sugar cube buildings, most with private pools or terraces, a world class steak house, an Instagram-worthy infinity pool, Thalasso Spa, and there is no indulgent whim unmet.

Taking filoxenia—the Greek concept of hospitality—to heart, you could say that the business is in the blood of owners and Originals Marios and Vangelis Daktylides. Nearly 40 years ago, the brothers' father built the first private hotel on the island, foreseeing the need for luxury accommodation centered around famously gracious Greek hospitality. Together, the family has set the benchmark for the island while ensuring a commitment to the local community remains at the forefront through environmental conservation and local sourcing.

''We’ve grown up working in hotels,’’ says Marios of his upbring. ''As kids, we used to do coffee service on the weekends at my parent’s hotels. There was never a question in my mind that this is what I wanted to do.’’

Taking the design lead, Lebanese architect Galal Mahmoud was sure to create ample retreat-like areas where guests can find plenty of nooks to take in the serene environment. Classically understated with a traditional Cycladic profile, the hotel marries the customary beauty of the island with a modern touch. Bright whites and soothing beiges are stunningly flecked with bold pink or teal-blue furnishings that characterize both the quietude of the setting and the vibrant spirit of the property.

The 81 rooms and suites range from the 26-square-meter Apollon Room to the 40-square-meter Nissos Junior Suite and Mediterranean Junior Suite. All guestrooms feature a king-size bed or twin beds and impressive sea views, apart from the Apollon Room, which faces inland. While the 26-square-meter Aegean Junior Suite, the Nissos Junior Suite, and the 35-square-meter Sunset Junior Suite all boast an outdoor Jacuzzi, the 26-square-meter Horizon Suite and the Mediterranean Junior Suite play host to a private pool and private infinity pool, respectively.

All access wellness
The hotel’s Kalypso Restaurant spans a rough-hewn stone space with wide panoramic windows onto the blue sea, dotted with bright fuchsia chairs, and spilling into the poolside sheltered alcove bar George’s, named after the patriarch of the family. Here, blanketed lounger chairs and dinner tables dot the landscape and quiet nooks allow for uninterrupted sunshine by day and endless stargazing by night.

Awaken to a light-flooded Champagne breakfast with stunning views of the sea and a lavish buffet breakfast spread of delights prepared by chef Panagiotis Tsoukatos, served poolside under parasol. The morning bounty includes cooked-to-order eggs and a full American breakfast with fresh baked breads, pastries, and juices along with charcuterie and salmon. Local delicacies are well-represented in the form of dolmades, Greek yogurt with island honey, fresh tomatoes, olives, halva, kataifi, and baklava.

The hotel’s Satori Thalasso spa has five pools offering different therapeutic salinity contents, a sauna, and facial and body treatment rooms that revitalize the spirit while also nurturing the body. From traditional massages to the latest techniques in wellness, the paradisiacal setting lends itself to all-encompassing wellbeing. Expert staff recommends personal services based on guests’ needs and informed by St. Barth spa treatments and Elemis products.

Location
A picturesque Cycladic town with a maze of small streets and whitewashed houses and churches, Mykonos Town is set around a harbor and is home to iconic 16th-century windmills, art galleries, cafés, stylish bars, shops, and restaurants. High-end boutiques, such as Dsquared2, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, are also part of the mix. Here, too, one finds the Aegean Maritime and the Agriculture Museums, perfect for those seeking a thorough introduction to the area’s rich cultural and economic history. The island’s multiple perfect sand beaches are only minutes away by car, and for the explorers, a day trip to Delos (a short boat ride away) is a must do.
